Sacha Baron Cohen is nothing if not a chameleon and his latest role requires him to try on a new shade... seriousness. Cohen is starring as real life Israeli spy Eli Cohen in the new Netflix Original Miniseries The Spy. Interestingly enough, Baron Cohen is related to Eli Cohen on his father's side, an interesting twist in this already interesting true story.
From 1961 until his death in 1965, Cohen successfully posed as a wealthy Syrian businessman living in Argentina, all while transmitting covert secrets to the Israeli government. It's an interesting choice of role for Baron Cohen, but he's always prided himself on disappearing into his roles, which is something he has no choice but to do here.
The series comes to us courtesy of Israeli-born writer Gideon Raff, who is responsible for the Israeli series that was transformed into Homeland here in the States. Raff has served as an executive producer on Homeland throughout its run and he has written and directed all six episodes of The Spy, so he seems like a steady hand to guide Baron Cohen toward the more serious side of things.
The best news of all is that the wait won't be long for The Spy as it's set to premiere on Netflix one week from Friday, on September 6.
