As the rest of the DCEU was going down in flames, Wonder Woman rose from the ashes like the proverbial phoenix, making boatloads of money and providing the first lady of the DC Universe with a kick-ass origin story. Yes, it devolved into a cgi-heavy nightmare in the third act, but it was imbued with enough pathos and filled with some aces action set pieces that made it a cut above the rest of the films in the larger cinematic universe.
Now Gal Gadot's super-powered heroine is back in Wonder Woman 1984, a sequel set in that totally cool, awesome, outrageous decade that pop culture loves to romanticize these days. This time around, Diana is making her way in the material world when some sort of vague threat arises and she is suddenly and unexpectedly reunited with her deceased lover Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), who also hasn't aged a day in the last seventy years.
There's hints of the two major villains here in Kristen Wiig's Cheetah and Pedro Pascal's Maxwell Lord, the latter of whom looks exactly like Jeremy Renner in American Hustle...
Being that we're still six months out from the film debuting, it's nice that they're not unveiling the entire plot quite yet, and there's enough exciting stuff in here to make up for the lack of storyline. Wonder Woman 1984 hits theaters on June 5, 2020.
