Wisconsin running back Montee Ball could be in training camp somewhere right now duct taped to the goal posts or standing on a table singing "On Wisconsin!" had he opted to enter the 2012 draft. Instead he returned to college for his senior season after beiing told he'd likely be just a third round pick.
After getting attacked by five assailants near downtown Madison early Wednesday morning, he might be thinking going in the third round would not have been half bad!
The attack came at around 2:15 AM. Ball's friends were walking in front of him; when they turned to see what their friend was doing they saw him on the ground getting kicked in the head and chest. The attackers scattered when people came to Ball's aid. He was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a possible concussion, but otherwise the injuries were minor.
Police are looking into the attack, but do not have much to go on. Witness say they say Ball exchange a few words with the group, but otherwise there is no known reason for the attack. Ball said he did not know any of the group, that they were all African American, and stood between 5'8" and 6'3". According to police, the area Ball was in has had issues with violence all summer.
It has not been ruled out that Ball may have been targeted for who he is. Last season he led the nation in rushing with 1,923 yards and scored 39 touchdowns, tying the FBS record set by Barry Sanders. He has yet to fumble in over 600 career carries. He is expected to be an early favorite for the Heisman after being a finalist for the award last season.
