Why Are We Watching ‘Cake Wars’? Because Halo, That’s Why

Well, huh. As video games become more mainstream, less niche and nerdly, you find them popping up in the weirdest places. You see doctors and such who have never gamed in their lives, gleefully announcing that they caught ‘a giant crab thing’ in Pokémon Go. You see places of worship proudly advertising their Pokéstop status. You see Street Fighter V tourneys given airtime on ESPN, like it’s an actual legitimate sport. What a time to be alive.

Most important, we’ve got shows like Cake Wars challenging contestants to make the most fancy-ass Halo-themed cakes they can. Yep, this really happened last night.

Now, you won’t see much coverage of cakery-makery bakery shows here on Egotastic. That’s not really our bag. But we’ll make an exception here. Cake Wars, you understand, uses multi-million dollar IPs as the theme for its cakes, and the latest episode used Xbox’s iconic shooter. Quite a challenge, right there.

I’m sure young gamers across the land have had their mamas bake them a giant-eff-off-Master-Chief-head birthday cake. I’ve no doubt that this has been a thing many times. But we’re talking confections a lil’ more ambitious than that. I haven’t seen the episode, true enough, but if there weren’t lifesize blueberry Beam Swords and such being made, color me disappointed.

Xbox boss Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hyrb was there as a guest judge, as another nice touch. There was a $10,000 prize at stake, as well as an invite to the 2016 Halo World Championship (back in March, such is the magic of television). Interested parties can watch the episode repeated tonight at 12am, and again at 5pm on August 6, GameSpot reports.
