It came as no surprise when violence broke out at some of the 2012 Euro matches. Soccer fans in Europe are notorious for being staunch supporters of their team. Add in a sense of nationalism for competitions like this, and it didn't take much for violence to break out at a number of matches these last couple weeks.
As crazy as some of the violent events were there have been no reports of anyone dying because of them. However, there has been one death that can be attributed to the Beautiful Game.
In China, one young fan by the name of Jiang Xiaosham passed away after watching every match over the last 11 days.
What? That doesn't make any sense! Tired? Maybe, but dead?
The 26-year old Xiaosham apparently loved soccer and vowed to watch every match. Considering where he lived relative to the games that meant being up at all hours of the night since matches were on at midnight and 2:45 AM. The problem he found that was after the second match of the morning he often had to go to work.
So for 11 days the relatively healthy young man stayed up smoking and drinking while he watched soccer and then went to work every morning. He would rest on occasion, but for the most part he did not sleep for close to two weeks.
The last match that he saw was Italy's 2-0 defeat of Ireland on June 18.
According to his doctor his death had something to do with drinking for 11 days and not having any water (so maybe watching soccer isn't hazardous to your health after all--darn cigarettes and alcohol).
