Next month's Spidey spin-off Venom is slowly building hype to its release and there's some interesting tidbits to be found in this new TV spot for the flick. First and foremost, we need to talk about Tom Hardy operating Venom like a cgi sock puppet at the 13 second mark. What on earth is happening in this movie?
Something tells me that director Ruben Fleischer's thinking goes something like this: The last comic book movie Tom Hardy was in, he was hampered by a face mask that distorted his voice. This time around, we need to give Tom Hardy as much screen time as humanly possible, meaning we've got to find ways to have Venom and Hardy on screen at the same time.
It's pretty dumb, but I'm willing to see what they've cooked up. I'm intrigued enough by what I've seen in the most recent trailer and this TV spot to check this thing out. Plus the promise of Woody Harrelson—entering his whopping sixth franchise after Star Wars, Planet of the Apes, The Hunger Games, Zombieland, and Now You See Me—turning up as Carnage, even if it's only to set up a sequel, is enough to get me in the theater.
Venom opens on October 5.
