GAMING

Have you ever sampled the fine work of Uwe ‘Boll-ocks’ Boll? This German filmmaker is known for inflicting the likes of Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead on us. One small step for a man, one giant dump on the face of video game movie adaptations.
Still, said reputation had already scraped right through the bottom of the barrel into the dirty, dirty ground without Boll’s help. As those of us experienced in the gametastic world know, video game adaptions of movies are generally awful. They’re quick money-spinners with Pirates of the Caribbean or whatever written across the front of the box. And that works the other way around too.
As such, even big budget releases from well-known franchises have little hope of success. Take the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie, which Ubisoft themselves already think will be a failure. Well, kinda sorta.
The company now has a spangly new motion picture division, working on bringing us movies of their biggest properties: Watch Dogs, Splinter Cell and such. Assassin’s Creed is coming to theaters as a trilogy, MCV reports, but Ubi aren’t expecting a big return. As Euro boss Alain Corre stated,
‘We are not going to earn a lot of money from it. It is a lot more a marketing thing, it is also good for the image of the brand. Although we will make some money, it is not the purpose of this movie. The purpose is to bring Assassin’s Creed to more people. We have our core fans, but what we would like is to put this franchise in front of a lot more people who, maybe, will then pick up future Assassin’s Creed games.’
So there it is. Don’t worry, Alain, we weren’t expecting cinematic greatness anyway. Just come up with something better than the Tetris movie’s going to be, and that’s a result in itself.
