There are very serious rumors going around that Top Gun 2 is really really happening. Terminator Genisys producers David Ellison and Dana Goldberg, who also are working on Top Gun 2, let some of the details loose during a press conference in Berlin. The story will involve a middle-aged Maverick in present day and will revolve around the increased use of drones. Maybe the drones will be the robotic equivalent of Iceman? I'm not sure. It's unclear whether or not Tom Cruise will reprise the role that made him a household name. He may be too busy being baby eating crazy. Ellison said that Justin Marks is working on the screenplay as we speak. Marks also said,
"He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy have turned into today. There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick."
I'm very skeptical. When has a sequel done twenty or thirty years after the fact ever been good? I'm trying to rack my brain and I can't think of any. Most are like the Star Wars prequels or The Godfather III, bad rehashed versions of the originals made mostly as cynical money-making schemes fed on fan nostalgia. I will see this new Top Gun, though. I'm a sucker for punishment.
