Making a game is a great accomplishment and making a successful video game franchise is even greater, but making one of the greatest video game franchises of all time…well, you become an entertainment icon and receive bazillions of dollars for that. To become something more than the rest and stand out among the sea of failed video games, you have to make strides to change the video game industry and push the boundaries of what's possible.

This is our look at the Top 18 Video Game Franchises of All Time. In a way a countdown like this is easier than selecting the top games of all time because when you get into iterations of the most popular titles, the arguments get really intricate and truly maddening. Comparing Madden NFL 2004 to Madden NFL 10 can drive you insane until you realize  what you're actually evaluating is that franchise's style of video game football. Grand Theft Auto (after III) has a set of style and gameplay expectations that build and evolve from one title to the next. Arguing the merits of Vice City against IV comes off as splitting hairs. We're looking at franchises as a whole.

Why only 18? Around here there's a lot of things we can't do on Egotastic until that magic number of 18 comes up, so it's a figure that always stands out. Courtney Stodden knows what we're talking about.

For all of these reasons and more we present Egotastic's Top 18 Video Game Franchises of All Time. Hit the gallery to begin your journey through recent video game history.
