There's hyperbole and then there's hubris. In this new video about Tom Hardy's training regiment to inhabit the character of Venom on the big screen, one of his trainers says that Venom is "one of the darkest, most powerful super-villains that Marvel has ever created." Look, I like Venom as much as the next guy that owns a XXXL shirt of him battling Carnage, but please don't try to sell me on him being in the top 10 most powerful Marvel villains of all-time. Heck, I don't even think he's the most powerful villain that Spider-Man has faced.
But I digress... The video, of course, shows off Tom Hardy's dedication to creating a character from how stupid his haircut will be right on down to the degree of incoherence his mumble will have. I think the secret's out, Tom Hardy's great and he works really hard. Tell me something I don't know.
If I seem down on this Venom movie it's because there's honestly no reason I can think of to be excited for it. There's the possibility it might not suck, but that's slim. I find it best to go in with rock bottom expectations for a film where you're selling a villain as the protagonist. That's never worked out well. Ever. We'll find out if Venom breaks the curse on October 5, 2018. Super early spoiler alert: It won't.
