I have said it many times that there has never been a really good movie made based on a video game. Oh sure, we all have fond memories of Mortal Combat, but go back and watch it now and you will see that it is very much not a good movie. The pinnacle of badness was probably the Bob Hoskins Super Mario Bros. abomination. But I have to admit that the trailers for Assassin's Creed have given me pause. If nothing else the movie looks gorgeous and Michael Fassbender is a good actor. Plus, it helps that Assassin's Creed had a good story to it. But can it break the video game movie curse? Let's put it this way, it's the first video game movie I've ever considered going to see in the theaters since the aforementioned Super Mario Bros movie.
The costumes, sets, and effects are certainly great. But we all know that effects does not a good movie make. Just ask the Star Wars prequels.Â
