Well, that was fast.
Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution, has announced a sequel to Godzilla is already in the works. Considering the film brought in almost $200 million in its opening weekend with a budget of $160 million, I guess it's not hard to figure out why.
Gareth Edwards is presumably on board to direct the second installment, and Legendary Pictures will once again team with Warner to produce the film. Obviously, there's no word on a plot at this point, but I think it will somehow involve a giant green lizard that shits money.
Aside from financial success at the box office, Godzilla is also a critical success. It currently has a score of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn't exactly 12 Years a Slave territory, but is pretty damn good for a summer blockbuster about a giant monster. (Source)
