Word on the street is that next month's Alita: Battle Angel might actually be a good movie, so every new clip and trailer that comes down the pike either bears that out or makes one wonder what people are talking about. Since these futuristic movies always have a made-up, extremely violent sport that's played, Alita: Battle Angel introduces us to Motorball, which is kinda roller derby meets dodgeball meets Quidditch. In the future.
It sounds and looks an awful lot like Rollerball as well, the James Caan movie from the seventies, remade in the early aughts with Chris Klein and Rebecca Romijn. The major difference is that monsters and genetically enhanced people are playing Motorball as opposed to just regular schmegular humans.
Director Robert Rodriguez and Producer James Cameron both know how to make great visual effects films that hold your interest long past the point their lame scripts usually do, so I don't doubt that this could be a good movie. It just feels like five different movies we've already seen all rolled in to one, in other words, a mess. But again, one never knows.
Alita: Battle Angel motorballs its way into theaters on Valentine's Day, the same day as Happy Death Day 2 U and Isn't It Romantic. In other words, it's the best choice for that weekend.
