Drew Brees made NFL history yesterday, signing his name to a 5-year, $100 million dollar deal with a league record $60 million guaranteed. Brees is also the first player who will average $20 million in salary.
Brees is hardly the first $100 million man in the history of the NFL though. The first do it, Brett Favre, signed his nine-figure deal back in 2001, followed shortly by Drew Bledsoe. Yes, Drew Bledsoe.
So who are they? Mostly quarterbacks, naturally. There are two wide receivers and one defensive lineman. But remember, guaranteed money is relatively new in the NFL. It used to be that a player could get signed for tens of millions of dollars, but could turn around and get cut after week one and collect only that week's pay. So none of these guys collected the full amount of their contracts. Maybe one of the more recent signings will be the first.
