SUPEREGO
bill-swift - July 4, 2012
Athletes are a superstitious bunch. As hard as they train to become the best that they can be in the game of their choice, a silly superstition can be the difference between success and utter failure. One of the most time tested and well known ones superstitions involves an athlete's favorite activity next to playing the game - sex.
For some reason it is a widely held belief that it is bad luck for an athlete to have sex before a major competition. Ask anyone that has ever played a competitive sport in high school or beyond and they will tell you that they have adhered to this superstition (translation: It's their excuse for not getting any).
Apparently that was not the case for Spain, at least according to one BBC Commentator. How he knows--I don't want to know--but since Spain trounced Italy 4-0 he must be on to something.
If this simple slip of the tongue had occurred in the U.S. we would have the FCC being bombarded with thousands of phone calls, a congressional investigation, and at least one person would get fired. In the UK they don't appear to care one bit.
