Stephen King fans had something to celebrate this morning when news broke that Ron Howard has picked up the pieces of his shattered plans to make The Dark Tower books into a series of films and television specials and is moving forward with them to a new studio. The popular series of books by King about a roaming cowboy in a mystical post-apocalyptic land was ready to go with Javier Bardem attached as the Gunslinger until Universal halted plans on the ambitious project last summer. But now it looks like the wheels are turning again, this time with Ron Howard-favorite Russell Crowe strapping on the six-shooters.
Howard's original plan was to cram the seven books into three films interspersed with a television series during the intervening years. It's not clear if that's still the vision for the series or if it's been altered in order to get a green light. But either way, the long-gestating project finally has some steam again, making any fantasy fans happy campers.
While we still have quite a wait before getting a glimpse of King's 'world that's moved on', we take a look at some of our favorite post-apocalyptic movies.
