The Bond Theme Origin is Revealed As We Skyfall into the Top Ten 007 Title Songs

If the song playing in the video above sounds kind of familiar it's because it should. Before he was given the reigns by Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman to write the theme for their new spy movie Dr. No, and long before he was embittered in litigation with John Barry over who had the true honor to say they'd created the 007 diddy, composer Monty Normal was trying to get a musical off the ground based on an Indian novel. The show never saw the light of day, but as you can hear, the unmistakable spy theme can be heard.

This happens a lot. Composers borrow music from themselves, sometimes negating them from Academy Award qualifications because their own music isn't original. But even though the inspiration came from a book about an Indian man trying to buy a house for himself, the James Bond theme is one of the must recognizable pieces of music in pop culture history.

So with that in mind and with Skyfall less than a month away from release(!), it's time we turned our attention to the Bond theme songs. For any 007 fan, the anticipation prior to a film is usually consumed with the question: Who will perform the theme song? This year we were treated to Adele in the nostalgic-laced franchise homage Skyfall.
