The internet is buzzing with this video of a bull goring a man in Spain. That poor guy is the latest in a long line of people attacked by bulls in Pamplona, in rodeos, at ranches, and...well, other places you find bulls.
Here are some of the worst -- or, from the bull's point of view, the best -- videos of bull attacks. Olé!
Let's start small. Just two guys, a bull, and a pen. The obviously very smart guys decide to taunt the bull, which then slams one of them against the fence and stabs him repeatedly. Friends try to get him out, but as he scrambles over the fence, the bull comes after him again and wounds him some more. Finally, he escapes. Stick around for the end to see the gruesome gash across his head.
If you're one of those people who watches bullfights and roots for the bull, this video is for you. A matador is doing his thing -- which involves stabbing the bull -- when it outflanks him, knocks him to the ground, and gores him. The matador's face is covered in blood. But attendants lead him safely away, while the bull's fate hasn't changed.
Maybe the matador had it coming. Less guilty are the guests -- VIPs, no less -- who were allowed close to two yoked bulls before a bull-riding competition. Someone seems to be caring for one of the bulls, rubbing its head, when it goes berserk and starts bucking. It quickly mows down two people and sends the rest scattering. Human handlers are useless against the power of two bulls tethered together. The animals gallop around the area, knocking over tables and chairs, until they simply tire themselves out.
Canada has rodeos, too. And this video beats just about anything I could find out of the US. Four seconds into a bull ride, the animal bucks its rider -- then stays between him and the fence. Rodeo clowns try to distract the bull, but the vengeful beast goes directly for its rider. It picks him up with its horns and throws him 25 feet (in Canada, about eight meters) in the air. The landing breaks the rider's wrist and several ribs. It's an astounding video.
I still don't understand why the people of Pamplona hold this crazy event every year. This footage includes several encounters with frenzied bulls and people who couldn't run fast enough or slipped up or were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The narrow streets, some walled off for the event, make it hard to escape once a bull has you in its sights. In this video, you can see people (including one American) getting trampled, gored, and tossed around.
OK, one more. This video from Spain is incredible because, with people running all around, the bull zeroes in on one poor guy and just keeps going after him. It'll stop, make a few steps towards the dozen or so other potential victims...but then go right back to its prisoner. The guy makes a smart choice to hide sort of underneath the bull's horns, so it can't gore him, but once it backs up, he's exposed again. This goes on for more than two full minutes; people throw things at the bull and poke him with sticks but no one comes to the man's aid until the bull finally gets distracted by a giant soccer ball. Somehow, the man gets up and runs off, apparently not seriously injured.
