As putrid as W., Oliver Stone's 2008 SNL sketch masquerading as a movie was, they did nail one bit of casting. Jeffrey Wright made a spectacular Colin Powell and stole his handful of scenes with an honesty that cut through the terrible wigs and bad impressions going on around him.
Many of us have wondered if the upcoming Dick Cheney biopic would fall into the same trap. Writer and director Adam McKay got his start at SNL and has only recently begun doing quasi-dramatic work with The Big Short. Then the cast began to emerge and it seemed like a strange mix of people that might actually keep things on the right side of parody. Christian Bale as Cheney, Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush, Amy Adams as Cheney's wife Liz, Bill Pullman, Steve Carell... All fine and good.
Now they've tipped the scales in the other direction with the announcement that Tyler Perry will be playing Colin Powell in this flick. Honestly, who cares that Jeffrey Wright did this once already? You go get Jeffrey Wright, though in fairness he may have been committed to shooting season two of Westworld, so who knows?
Also in Deadline's piece is confirmation that Carell is playing Donald Rumsfeld. You can take any hope that this thing wasn't going to be a glorified SNL sketch and chuck it right out the window. Man, I had such high hopes too. Oh well, I'll still go see it. I'll do anything for my man Sam.
