If you were to make a list of Disney films that have a perfect ending and do not, in any way, require a sequel, 2012's Wreck-It Ralph would have to be at or near the top of the list. However, this is Hollywood and if there's money to be made, why not rake it in hand over fist?
Ralph Breaks the Internet will be the fourth theatrically released sequel to a Disney Animated Film—not counting Pixar movies—following 1990's The Rescuers Down Under, 1999's Fantasia 2000, and 2002's Return to NeverLand. Point being, this isn't something Disney does on the regular. Most of their sequels are direct-to-video and aimed at a much younger audience, making this something of a rarity.
The fact that the entire creative team and cast—including John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman—are back is a good sign, and the film's new characters like Taraji P. Henson's Yesss seem to be adding something new and original to the mythology. Whether this translates into a good time at the movies remains to be seen, but I and all the other parents of the world will be seeing this over the Thanksgiving holiday, that's for sure.
Ralph Breaks the Internet on November 21, the same day as Creed II and Robin Hood.
