A few months ago, I attended an advanced screening of the upcoming film Beautiful Boy, and I have a warning for you Hollywood... Nail down your Oscars, because this movie's coming for all of them. The debut trailer for the film shows off a hint of the tormented relationship between a journalist (Steve Carell) and his drug addicted son (Timothée Chalamet), based on the true story—and respective memoirs—of David and Nic Sheff.
The film marks the English language debut of Belgian director Felix van Groeningen, who directed the Oscar-nominated Broken Circle Breakdown, and features a screenplay written by Lion scribe Luke Davies. Couple that with Steve Carell in his drama beard, a hot young star in Chalamet, and you've got a recipe for a surefire Oscar contender this coming year.
The only thing I'll caution you on is that the film is not told in any sort of linear fashion. It's narrative is similar to a memory play, where moments at different times in the characters' lives are tied together. It's an effective tool for telling this particular story, but it can also be jarring to audience members raised on linear storytelling. Seek this one out when it begins rolling out in theaters on October 12.
