This almost hurts to write, but yes—there is a Florida politician that is trying to get the law prohibiting dwarf tossing overturned. Yes, at one time it was actually legal.
Apparently prior to the passage of a law in 1989 it was legal for bars to hire little people so that patrons could toss them. It's kind of hard to believe so I'm just going to pause for a moment and let that one sink in.
You hear people joke about it, but apparently at one time little people would be hired to put on some pads and a helmet and got literally tossed by people. Injuries were not uncommon when someone was tossed. The majority of the damage had to be psychological.
What kind of person allows himself to get tossed around like a silly toy? For that matter what kind of person does the tossing? Think what you will about the sport, but according to Florida Representative Ritch Workman legalizing it would help create some much needed jobs.
Since there aren't any statistics on the number of unemployed little people in Florida it is hard to tell how many people this could actually affect if the law was actually repealed. Oh- did I mention that the governor supports the idea?
The notion is demeaning, dangerous, and just plain wrong. It will be interesting (and possibly scary) to see what the State of Florida actually does.
