Every man remembers their first time watching Showgirls. In that way it is similar to the assassination of John F. Kennedy as well as September 11th, although this movie leaves me with a slightly better taste in my mouth.
I remember it as if it was yesterday. Showgirls had already been out for several years at this point and I was left home alone on a Saturday. Naturally I turned on HBO with the vain hope that I would catch a glimpse of some boobies in a brief sex scene. Little did I know that I had stumbled upon the holy grail of not-porn.
At this point I was well aware of Saved By The Bell, but I had not yet realized that the actors in children’s shows were actually real people. Setting my eyes upon the grown up Jessie Spano doing the things I thought only Kelly Kapwoski would do was a watershed moment for me. I ceased thinking like a child and began thinking like a man, realizing that every woman I had ever known had breasts under her blouse.
For better or worse, that has led to me being the man I am today. I still have not forgotten the lessons which that movie taught me, and I think about them every day. I just hope the women I work with don’t realize that.
