Well, it's official. Hollywood is totally out of ideas. Despite the fact no one has played the game since 2011, Angry Birds the movie is coming to a theatre near you on July 1, 2016. You can thank Sony Pictures and the game's original developers, Rovio Entertainment, for this. They've joined forces, worked out a distribution deal, and hired producers John Cohen (Despicable Me) and David Maisel (Iron Man) to make this movie happen.
So will this game about the eternal struggle between birds and pigs actually lend itself to a substantial narrative suitable for a 90 minute feature? That remains to be seen. But if there is a God it will star Nicolas Cage and look something like this:
Of course, if Angry Birds the movie doesn't sound like your cup of tea, just hold tight. It's only a matter of time before somebody makes a big screen adaptation of Minesweeper.
