Salvadoran Fireball Festival Is Better Than Labor Day

Your Labor Day Bar-B-Q sucks compared to the Salvadoran fireball festival. Today, while you eat hot dogs and potato salad, the people in the village of Nejapa in El Salvador put on clown makeup and throw fireballs at each other. The festival commemorates the day in 1922 when the village was destroyed by a volcano. You'd think that remembering a volcanic event by flinging fire at each other would be counter intuitive. It goes back to a local legend that the eruption was really Saint Jeronimo shooting fireballs at Satan like Ryu from Street Fighter. That's awesome. The only local legend in my neighborhood in Brooklyn is that it's where Saturday Night Fever took place.
