The Houston Rockets were in Detroit last night to face the Pistons, and after one game, Houston looks like geniuses for trading for James Harden. The Beard went nuts last night, hitting 14 of 25 shots for 37 points and adding 12 assists. The only thing that slowed him down was the fog machine that apparently nobody knew how to turn off, delaying the game for a few minutes just before halftime.
Jeremy Lin also made his regular season debut, and dished out eight assists and scored 12 points. Good start for Houston to win on the road. The other big news from last night was the Lakers dropping to 0-2 and getting hammered on Twitter for it. Remember when everyone went crazy hating the Heat in LeBron's first year? The Lakers are now that team that everyone (outside of L.A.) hopes goes 0-82. Hey, right now they're on pace for it!
Steve Nash left that game in the second quarter with a bruised leg and didn't return. The stat being thrown around this morning is that only six teams that started 0-2 went on to win the NBA Finals. Three times it was the Lakers. I think that's kind of a pointless stat myself, but that's the kind of scrutiny they're going to face all year long. The Heat started 9-8 in LeBron's first year and made it to the Finals, but lost.
The Lakers though, don't have time to spend a season figuring things out to win next year. Their window with Kobe Bryant is closing and with Nash being 39, they want and need to win this year. They have enough veterans that they should be able to withstand any struggles from a mental standpoint, but with headlines after the first game wondering if coach Mike Brown is on the hot seat, things could possibly implode. That's unlikely though.
