Once Upon a Time…Not All Entertainment Was Based on Fairy Tales

I'm not exactly sure where this fad came from. I guess when Hollywood has raped and pillaged every book currently in print they had no choice but to go back a couple hundred year sand start pilfering through Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm to come up with something to make films and TV shows about. It seems like everywhere you look now there's just some revisionist tale about this fairy tale character or that one. And for everyone that hasn't been made yet there's one or two of them in development or already being filmed.

The strange thing about it is that the success rate of these adaptations really aren't all that great. There have been a few big hitters, but a lot of dreck that hardly makes a blip before it's cancelled or tossed out of theaters. It hardly even seems possible that this genre exists at all at this point at all after the first couple of Shrek movies subverted those stories and immediately made them irrelevant. And yet, one after another comes crawling out of the boob tube.

So love them or hate them, we look back at the newest genre today--the Revisionist Fairy Tale (but hey, at least it's better than whatever tween crap genre Twilight started).
