George Lucas used to be a messiah figure to nerds everywhere. He is the creator of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, after all. His company ILM made modern special effects possible. Then he created the Special Edition of the original Star Wars films and people started to turn on him. Then he created the prequels and he became public nerd enemy number one. When he sold Lucasfilm to Disney and they began pre-production on the new Star Wars trilogy, he was purposefully frozen out. He's all bitter about it, but that's what he gets. Still, there are still people out there that are Lucas apologists that think we should give him another chance. They created a petition on Change.org to see if they can get him to direct Episode IX instead of Colin Trevorrow. They've only garnered a paltry 6200 signatures. No one thinks this is a good idea. The only thing that makes sense to me is that the people who signed it are insane.
Besides, Lucas claims he isn't interested in making any more Star Wars movies. He says he wants to make experimental films like when he was in college. I would bet serious money that if Disney offered him the chance and some serious money he'd do it in a heartbeat. I don't see that happening.
