Nintendo’s Own Take on Resident Evil Returns With Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon

Rabid Nintendo-ites are surely familiar with Gamecube launch title Luigi's Mansion. In lieu of the main man himself taking a lead role on the fledgling console, his half-witted lanky brother got to feel a delusion of grandeur or two in his stead. The resultant ghost-busting shenanigans were steeped in atmosphere, in an endearing sort of way. They were also criminally fleeting.

As such, the company are endeavouring to offer a more substantive experience with the upcoming sequel, freshly dubbed Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. (Significantly more of a Castlevania-esque subtitle, in my humble judgment. I'm willing to bet, nonetheless, that there won't be giant mutated bears swinging their undead genitalia about with wanton abandon and other assorted demonic entities here.) Nintendo's E3 presentation yesterday cast a fresh volley of knowledge nuggets our way yesterday, from the ballista of purified fact. We were already aware that multiple mansions were on offer in the main adventure, but it seems that each will provide singular environments and opponents for our delectation. While the original took care to lend a degree of variety to each room, it suffered from a ‘world map' that was meagre indeed. ("You want MORErooms, Oliver? SILENCE, FILTH-ENCRUSTED URCHIN-YOUTH! Put down that decrepit gruel bowl! There was that one place in the mansion's loft with animal's head on the walls! What do you want, blood?Youdare deny the coolness of creature-countenances? Such insubordination!Where's my ass-caning cane?") A range of manors with themed aesthetics would bolster the sense of freedom whilst also mitigating the occasional disjointed feel from the Gamecube release.

The suggestion of a greater variety of aggressors is also a welcome one. Those minibosses aside, the mansion's occupants were a generic crew. We met the esteemed likes of 'the tedious orange one' 'the tedious pink one' and 'that fat bastard green one, who throws banana skins upon the surely priceless carpeting for the sole purpose of making us slip on our asses. How I loathe him.' (I liked to refer to the latter as 'Big Dave' for short, as that's quite the moniker.) There's no mention thus far as to the forms these new ghosts will take. Among the new images you see here (courtesy of siliconera) was a rather endearing little dog-freak, though, so let's cross every bodily appendage for a bizarre menagerie of animal-spectres.

A fleeting mention of a debuting ‘strobe light' function, which will change the way you combat the menace of the mansion-dwellers, was also made. In short, a new installment to watch as the 'holiday season' release approaches.
