SUPEREGO

A years old photo of Tim Tebow taken by GQ and repurposed in their latest issue, has caused WFAN sports radio host Craig Carton to lose it a little bit. The picture shows Tebow standing shirtless, his legs crossed and his arms stretched out to his sides, almost as if he's posing like Jesus.
That pose caused Carton to call Tebow 'sexy Jesus' as well as a narcissist and a fraud today on his show. Perhaps Carton didn't know that the photo was taken while Tebow was quarterbacking the Florida Gators. The picture has been altered to black and white, and the Florida signage was digitally removed. Either way, it's kind of crazy how Carton and his co-host Boomer Esiason have taken the Tebow hate to this level already.I get that sports radio hosts have this idea that being contrarian is the way to go; take a hard stance and rile up the listeners and callers and you get publicity. That's fine, that's how you get ratings I suppose. I also understand that the media obsession with Tebow is out of control. Have you ever seen another backup QB get the cover of a football preview, as Tebow is right now on the current GQ?
But that's not really Tebow's fault. He gets criticized for praying on the field. He's not the first athlete to do that. He gets criticized for his play, but he took a moribund Broncos team, re-energized them and led them to the playoffs where they actually won a game.
Tebow is outspoken about his Christian beliefs. He's hardly the first athlete to do that. Kurt Warner was pretty vocal about his own Christianity, but didn't invoke the backlash that Tebow seems to. Maybe because Warner won a Super Bowl people were willing to look past it more.
The thing is, Tebowmania isn't going away, not when he's playing in New York where the media is relentless. And if that causes people to get tired of the guy, that's somewhat understandable, but at least they should get outraged over something legitimate.
By the way, today is Tebow's 25th birthday. Enjoy your day, Tim.
