Without a doubt, the best thing about Rob Zombie's 2005 film The Devil's Rejects was its note perfect ending with the three anti-heroes going out in a blaze of glory while Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" blared on the soundtrack. To undo such a perfect ending seems like the dumbest, most boneheaded, half-assed route for the upcoming sequel 3 From Hell to take, but as this new trailer for the film demonstrates, that's exactly what Zombie is doing.
The trailer manages to show an awful lot of footage from the film without really hinting at the plot, other than flaunting the moronic notion that the lead characters survived their brush with hundreds of armed policemen. The lack of any substantial scenes with Sid Haig leads me to believe he won't be doing much this time around, relying on Bill Moseley and Sheri Moon Zombie to do the heavy lifting.
Any sequel that undoes the ending of the previous film—see most of the Halloween and Friday the 13th sequels—is almost universally terrible. A solid 90% of the reason The Devil's Rejects works at all is due to that orgiastic ending, so undoing it will likely put this flick in a camp with Alien3 and Ghostbusters II.
3 From Hell will be released in mid-September with three separate and unique Fathom Events screenings before going wide later in the year.
