Those of us who were cognizant when the whole Tonya Harding/Jeff Gillooly/Nancy Kerrigan thing happened prior to the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer probably don't see how that would make a very good movie. Sure it had intrigue and drama, but it's kind of hard to make anyone in that story outside of Nancy Kerrigan sympathetic. Well, they weren't counting on Margot Robbie taking the title role and making it her own as she proves in this new, completely wordless promo for the upcoming film I, Tonya.
Most of the hype surrounding this film has been about supporting actress Allison Janney's powerhouse performance, but people underestimate how good Margot Robbie is in it as well. Don't get me wrong, Allison Janney is the best and deserves all of the awards, but you've also got to hand it to Margot for holding her own in such a formidable role.
While I doubt this film will do anything to soften my opinion of Jeff Gillooly in particular, I might just associate Tonya Harding with Margot Robbie for the rest of time now. Kind of like I do with Jim Morrison and Val Kilmer. In my mind, they're the same person. I, Tonya opens in limited release one week from today.
