Remember back in June when Deep Silver announced that a sequel to Dead Island was coming and that more details would be revealed in the summer? Well it came ridiculously close but they still managed to stay true to their word as the first details and finally been revealed for the upcoming Dead Island: Riptide.

After hearing nothing more than the title and the fact that it would be a true sequel and not a spinoff, fans have been ripping their hair out over what could be in store for them when the game is finally released next year. Fear not, for the wait is over and we've got all the first details right here!

First of all, Riptide will put players back into the role of the same four survivors we all grew to love from the first title as well as the inclusion of a new mysterious playable character that no one seems to know anything about...like, at all. Whomever this person is, Deep Silver has promised that they will have their own unique skill set and combat style. Sounds good so far...

The story goes that the military helicopter you escape the island on manages to find a military ship at sea, but your safe haven is soon taken from you as a monsoon forces your party back onto land. This time, it's going to be much more than a walk down a sandy beach. Randomly changing weather conditions surround your group in everything from flash floods to rainstorms that will greatly reduce your visibility; definitely something we need to add some more horror into the series.

So where exactly does Riptide take place? Deep Silver confirms that players will be treading familiar settings but on the isle of Palanai in the city of Henderson and the dense tropical jungles this time around, where they'll meet new types of zombies that will put co-op strategies to the test via Hub Defense missions. Deep Silver's unique spin on a horde mode will challenge players to build defenses and place traps around their base to survive increasingly difficult waves of undead enemies.

Dead Island: Riptide currently has a rough release window of 'sometime' in 2013. That'll have to do for now, I suppose.
