Sony is over the moon this morning after Spider-Man: Homecoming scored the second biggest opening weekend in the studio's history, and now they're staring down the barrel of a gigantic question mark called The Dark Tower. Sony is hoping and praying that this long-awaited adaptation of Stephen King's longest-running book series will be their next big franchise and lord knows there's enough material to support several more films should the film become a hit.
It admittedly does have a lot going for it—as you can see from this new international trailer—not least of which are its stars Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Am I the only one who's severely distracted by the way McConaughey whistles his s's? Some people claim they don't hear it, but it's one of those things for me where once I heard it, I could never un-hear it.
So with a top notch cast, an acclaimed director, and great source material, it seems like this should be a slam dunk, right? I suppose the lingering issue, for me anyway, is that building a franchise before you've even got a hit film on your hands is a dicey proposition. Just ask Universal who already attempted this last month with The Mummy. I think this has a lot more potential than that did, but it's still the slightest bit disconcerting. We'll find out for sure when The Dark Tower opens on August 4.
