2015's Oscar winning film Ex Machina was one of the best science fiction films of the new millennium. This makes the prospect of writer/director Alex Garland's next film, Annihilation, all the more exciting, because he appears to be diving right back into some explosive and heady sci-fi realms.
Natalie Portman stars as The Biologist—the film's conceit is that it doesn't give its main characters names, but rather labels them based on profession—who is given an offer by The Psychologist (Jennifer Jason Leigh) to explore a completely uncharted place that has basically just appeared to them. It looks to be another film with lots of heavy discussions about nature and humanity and the eternal struggle between the two.
Those of you who may have been desiring more action from Ex Machina appear to be in for a treat as well as everyone's got guns in the trailer and all manner of stuff seems to be going down. More action doesn't necessarily make for a better movie, but it's comforting to know that Garland isn't relying so much on words this time as he is on action. Annihilation opens on February 23, though don't worry, February's a decent month for movies now thanks to Deadpool.
