While Marvel is championing the success of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony's over in the corner trying to figure out what Spider-Man universe characters to which they own the rights and can turn into a franchise. It was announced back in May that Tom Hardy would be stepping in to play the title role in the standalone origin film Venom, and we've heard precious little since then.
Well, it looks like everything's full steam ahead as another Oscar nominated star has agreed to appear in the film as well. According to Variety, Rogue One and The Night Of's Riz Ahmed is already signed on to the film in an undisclosed role, and they are close to signing Michelle Williams to play "a district attorney" who is also "Hardy's love interest."
Zombieland and Gangster Squad helmer Ruben Fleischer is directing from a script by Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner—who just wrote the already forgotten Dark Tower movie. I don't know if this is a good idea and I don't know if Carey Mulligan passed on this role before Michelle Williams said yes. Or if they were planning to go to Carey if Michelle said no. It's like Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard. How do you casting directors decide?
