With the recent release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the anticipation for Episodes VIII and IX as well as Rogue Squadron, the time has never been more right for Mel Brooks to bring back his classic spoof on sci-fi movies, Spaceballs. Brooks has confirmed that he is in the early days of developing a sequel that, (may or may not be called), The Schwartz Awakens. After I saw Force Awakens in December I pulled out my DVD copy of Spaceballs and watched it again and it is as brilliant as I remember it. We've unfortunately lost some of the cast over the years. John Candy will not be around to be Barf nor Joan Rivers to play Dot, however the real question is whether or not they can persuade Rick Moranis to come out of retirement to don the dark helmet to be...err...Dark Helmet.
Moranis hasn't been in front of a camera since 1997 and he refused to do the new Ghostbusters movie. He said he would act again given the right circumstances, it's just that the new Ghostbusters sucked. I for one can't see how he could turn down the opportunity to work with Mel Brooks again.
