Wes Anderson's quirks are not limited to the running times of his films alone, as proven by this new behind the scenes featurette for his latest film, the stop-motion animated Isle of Dogs. Rather than doing a boring old talking heads-type video where the actors talk about their characters, Anderson instead recorded his actors Bryan Cranston, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Liev Schreiber, F. Murray Abraham, Jeff Goldblum, Scarlett Johansson, Bob Balaban, and Tilda Swinton, and then animated their responses to be given by their on-screen canine counterparts.
It's an interesting conceit that perfectly sums up the world in which Anderson lives. His films aren't always successfully executed, but they're always uniquely his and represent an aesthetic that's instantly recognizable as being Wes Anderson-y. Considering that this is his first animated feature since Fantastic Mr. Fox, and that was the last movie of his I actually liked, I'm holding out hope that this will be a return to form for the notoriously eccentric director.
Whether you're a fan of Anderson's or not, you've got to admire his commitment to putting out wildly esoteric films every couple of years. I know I'll be there next weekend as Isle of Dogs opens in theaters beginning March 23.
