The highpoint for me in last night's debate didn't come from either President Obama or Mitt Romney but from a commercial break when the new two-minute trailer for Steven Spielberg's Lincoln premiered. It gave us a much deeper and less sentimental view of Daniel Day-Lewis as America's 16th President.
I have to admit that I wasn't really all that thrilled with the first trailer for the film which looked like a mash-up of War Horse and Hugo, leading me to believe that this was going to be just another exercise in sentimentality from the once-King of Hollywood. I feel like it's been years since Spielberg made a real movie that felt gritty and dirty (Munich, maybe). His last few films have been overly lit melodramas and that's what I expected of Lincoln until last night's new trailer, which gave me hope.
Will Day-Lewis's performance beat out these famous fake-Presidential speeches though?
