Without a doubt the most thankless job in the industry is Oscar host, leading many to pass on the job over the years—or hang it up after one go like Letterman. It's surprising to learn today that Kevin Hart has been offered and has accepted the job for next year's ceremony.
He's sort of a no-brainer for this job: He started as a stand-up and has transitioned into legitimate box office draw, making it feasible that people may tune in this year just to see Hart. He's far from the worst choice for this, but I would love to have him and The Rock Johnson co-host. That would be a lot of fun, wouldn't it? They're a delight together.
The show hasn't had a solid host the last few years with Neil Patrick Harris covering himself in flop sweat in multiple musical numbers, and Jimmy Kimmel bringing nothing much to the previous two ceremonies. At the very least, Hart will bring the stand-up sensibility to the job that previous very good hosts like Richard Pryor, Whoopi Goldberg, Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, and even Billy Crystal brought to the show. Stand-ups can plow through awkwardness and can riff on the ridiculous moments that come fast and furious during these things.
See Hart's official announcement below and get ready for a much shorter Oscar season this year as the nominations are announced on January 22, 2019, followed by the ceremony 31 days later on February 24.
