If there's one thing that shut-ins love, it's science fiction, which is why Netflix is constantly throwing money at big budget sci-fi spectacles. Their latest is titled Another Life and it stars Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff as the woman chosen to lead an interstellar mission to discover the source of a mysterious alien artifact that lands mysteriously on Earth.
It's not a bad premise, and there's a chance it might be a decent flick, but Netflix's track record with sci-fi lately is pretty abysmal. The Cloverfield Paradox was unwatchable, as were IO and Extinction, so I would only approach this with your expectations appropriately in check. The entire cast reads like a who's who of red flags like Tyler Hoechlin and Justin Chatwin, two names you likely don't recognize, but you know their faces if you've seen at least one terrible movie.
After doing a little mid-article-writing research, it turns out this is going to be a series and not a movie. Not that Netflix has fared any better with sci-fi series than they have with movies, but maybe this will buck the trend. Part of sci-fi is optimism, so let's at least feign it at this point.
Another Life premieres on Netflix on Thursday July 25.
