I hate human trafficking, but not for the reasons you would assume. I despise the practice because ill-informed politicians and privileged activists are using it as an excuse to wage war on porn. Forcing someone to have sex against their will is never okay, but I don’t see how rubbing one out to Sasha Grey is supporting sexual extortion. Kate Bosworth is joining the “let’s all suddenly care about human sex trafficking” bandwagon. Which would have been noble if she was inspired to help out on her own, but she wasn’t. She’s doing the least amount possible to help victims while soaking up all of the glory that goes along with attaching your name to the cause. She’s collaborating with her “favorite UK based designers” to screen print vague t-shirts that say “freedom for all.” In my opinion, this is more disingenuous than the coffee shop hipsters with handlebar mustaches asking if their $6 cortado is made with 100% fair-trade beans before ordering. With the way the world is currently set up, we will never see 100% fair-trade prostitution. And some shirt that looks like it was designed by Target’s fast fashion team won’t stop the cartels from kidnapping little Lupe should the opportunity arise.

Kate Bosworth was stunned by what she learned as she dug into the dark world of human trafficking.

The 35-year-old actress now works closely with CAST, the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking. Her involvement came after she teamed up with her director husband, Michael Polish, on their drama Nona, which tells the story of a girl from Honduras who puts her faith in the wrong person while escaping to America to reunite with her mother.

“Traffickers prey on the most vulnerable in society,” says the actress, who is one of PEOPLE’s 25 Women Changing the World. “So ultimately, it’s very desperate human beings wanting a different life and taking a chance. Though the dangers of their chance are high, in their minds, it pales in comparison from where they came from.”

The saddest part is her interest almost feels like promotion for her show. I wouldn’t be surprised if her PR team suggested it. Immigration and sex trafficking are both hot button issues, congratulations to Kate for making both issues about her.
