GAMING

VR is an interesting thing. Like the first hairy-assed caveman who discovered fire found, some forces amaze, impress and goddamn terrify in equal measure. Virtual Reality is definitely one of them. We’ve all seen huge helmets and suits used in sci-fi movies, or Homer Simpson being sucked into a virtual world in that Halloween episode that time, but it’s hard to know just what the hell to expect here in the real world. We don't quite know what we have on our hands yet.
It’s far too darn early to say what Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR and such will really mean for gaming. As long as it’s more than just a hey-ma-look-what-I-can-do fad, with impressive tech for the sake of it, I’ll be content. Still, like the miserable old sceptical dude I am, I’m doubtful.
The key’s to play to your strengths. Don’t shoehorn touchscreen poking or motion-sensing waggling or any of that other bollocks in where it doesn’t belong. Instead, use it to create new kinds of experiences, which genuinely wouldn’t work without it.
We’ve seen Everest VR before, but E3 2016 gave us a chance to cruise on up that mountain for ourselves. This is an experience, right here, not a video game. Check out NGN’s E3 interview with the developer below, and give IGN’s brilliant account of their time with the title a read while you’re at it.
