John Travolta has outlived his relevancy twice now, so who's to say he's not due for an Oscar this coming awards season? That's right kids, it's time to reconsider the way we view John Travolta as he's strapping on one hell of a nice wig to play John Gotti, the man known as The Teflon Don of the Gambino crime family.
From the looks of this first trailer, someone let Travolta loose in the wig room because he's sporting four or five nicely coiffed pieces throughout. Travolta's legal spouse Kelly Preston is on hand as Gotti's wife, and hey look, it's Stacy Keach. Always fun to see him. Beyond that, there's basically no one in this movie. It's like they blew most of their budget on Travolta and he blew whatever was left on those wigs, and now we've got a prestige movie with no one of note beyond the star.
The worst news of all, I must report, is that the film is directed by Kevin Connolly, better known as E from Entourage. So yeah, if you thought Black Mass was a step down for the gangster genre, this is like a tumble down the stairs. I can't imagine this getting a wide release of any sort. This opens in 1,500 theaters, tops.
