A few weeks ago we found out Margot Robbie would play Harley Quinn in WB's upcoming adaptation of DC Comics' Suicide Squad. We also heard whispers that they were trying to sign Jared Leto to play the Joker and Tom Hardy to play...somebody.
However, none of that prepared us for yesterday's big Suicide Squad casting announcement. Yes, Robbie would play Harley Quinn, and yes, Leto would indeed play the Joker. But the WB also landed Will Smith to Deadshot, Tom Hardy to play Rick Flag, Jai Courtney to play Boomerang, and Cara Delevigne to play Enchantress. That's a bombshell announcement right there.
Personally, I'm totally on board with Jared Leto as the Joker. It's unlikely that anyone will ever top Heath Ledger, but Leto's haunting blue-eyes and nice-guy face could bring a new creepiness to the character.
Tom Hardy? Put that guy in any movie and I'll watch it.
But Will Smith? I don't know. For a guy who's made such terrible films recently, Smith is actually a pretty solid actor. However, it's hard to imagine the Fresh Prince as a villain/anti-hero.
Still, Suicide Squad will be written and directed by David Ayers. And if there's one thing we've learned from Training Day, The Fast and the Furious, End of Watch, and Fury, the guy knows how to write and/or direct movies. So I'd expect Suicide Squad to be pretty solid.
