Thank goodness we didn't end up with an Honest Trailer for Entourage's version of Aquaman like I thought we might, but the good folks over at Screen Junkies pulled through with this Honest Trailer for 1964's beloved classic Mary Poppins. There's a lot of low hanging fruit here like Dick Van Dyke's notoriously terrible "Cockney chimneysweep" accent, but they hit on one major point that bears repeating.
Mary Poppins is the best live action Disney movie of the period and absolutely the best combination of animation and live action, a trend this film kicked off. They run through a litany of terrible live action Disney movies from the period like The Gnome-Mobile and Monkeys, Go Home!, but the ones they don't mention are equally bad. Just scroll through this list and look at the movies released between 1960 and 1969, it's a parade of embarrassment.
Anyways, Mary Poppins is a classic and I look forward to watching it again before all the females in my family drag me to see Mary Poppins Returns this coming weekend. I know I'm not alone in that, and while I would love to get my hopes up, it's Rob Marshall. That guy's not qualified to direct traffic, let alone the long line of movies he's put his grubby paws all over.
Mary Poppins Returns to theaters starting tonight.
