Itching to Try iOS 6 Beta? Sorry, But Apple Says It’s Only for Developers

Although Apple has rolled out iOS 6 beta to developers, they have no intention of letting non-developers use the OS. So you can expect that they'll be pissed off at various sites that are selling the beta version at around $10 a pop.

Apple has launched a crackdown of these such sites, which has caused a number of popular iOS beta activation websites to shut down over the past few weeks. This all began after Wired published a post about it, which included links to the aforementioned sites.

Since the post went public, the sites listed in the article have shut down and are no longer accessible.

So what's the deal with these websites? Well, they originally allowed users to register their iOS's UDID (unique device identifier) with an Apple developer, where they're required to pay a small fee for the process. When it's done, the user can then download iOS 6, even if they're not a developer.

Anyone can sign up to become an Apple developer, although a beta fee of $99 a year is required. Apple then allows that developer to register a hundred devices to their account, which is far more than the number of devices that independent developers have.

A site owner claims to have made over $75,000 selling iOS 6 before Apple shut his site down. However, he asserts that they weren't violating any laws and is planning to launch a similar site soon.
