Is “Trainspotting 2” A Good Idea?

Trainspotting 2 is coming to F with your mind...hopefully. Danny Boyle, the director of the original Scottish smack adventure, said at SXSW that he would make  sequel based on Irvin Welsh's followup to Trainspotting, called Porno. Well, sort of. It will be "inspired" by Porno, which has Renton and the gang involved in the porn business. So, that's good news right? Is it? Many people, myself included, think that Trainspotting was one of the greatest films of the 90's. It was gritty, funny, disturbing, and completely groundbreaking. Danny Boyle first showed us his genius as a visionary filmmaker. However, anytime I hear that a sequel is coming several years after the original, I get nervous.

But he's not the same filmmaker he was in 1995. I'm not saying he isn't good anymore, just different. If you are expecting the same style as the original you will be disappointed.  He had hardly any money to make the original. This added to the film's raw and visceral feel. Now Danny Boyle makes a call and he gets a dump truck full of money. You can't go home again. You can't revisit something so many years later and pick up where you left off, or at least it isn't easy. I've just been burned too many times by sequels made decades after the originals. I still haven't gotten over the hurt and betrayal of the Star Wars prequels. Remember Godfather III? Even The Hobbit didn't come close to achieving the greatness of Lord of The Rings. I will suspend judgement until I see it...but I'm very sceptical.
