Apple has just released version 5.1.1 of iOS that address several security vulnerabilities and patches a few bugs on the operating system that iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches run on.

The update fixes a number of observed security issues, one of which allows hackers to take control of the affected device. Specifically, the iOS 5.1.1 update patches the security holes in the WebKit rendering engine, which allows cross-site scripting attacks from malicious websites when kept unchecked.

Another bug that was addressed by the update is the URL spoofing issue on Safari. Like the Webkit hole, this vulnerability directs users who visit malicious sites to a spoofed site that makes it seem like it was actually a legitimate domain.

Here's a quick rundown of the other issues that iOS 5.1.1 will patch up:

  • Improves the reliability of using HDR option for images shot using the Lock Screen shortcut
  • Addresses bugs that might prevent the new iPad from switching from 2G to 3G networks and vice versa
  • Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback
  • Provides enhanced reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List
  • Addresses an issue where an ‘Unable to purchase' alert could be displayed after a successful purchase

Users can get the update from iTunes or by accessing 'Settings' from the menu bar, followed by 'General' and then selecting 'Software Update.'
