I am of the opinion that 2008's Step Brothers is the absolute best of the "man child" comedies because it took that quoted concept literally. Where many comedies depicted grown men in various states of arrested development, Step Brothers showed us the true horror lurking beneath a good number of these free-wheeling improvisational comedies.
The prospect of that film's stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly reuniting is almost enough to get me excited for Holmes & Watson all by itself. I'm worried that without the steady comic hand of Adam McKay behind the camera, however, that this could become another laugh-free Ferrell endeavor—particularly considering it's directed by Etan Cohen, who already made one of those in Get Hard.
Reilly has a lifetime pass from me, so I'm already laughing at half of what he's doing. There's also no denying that Ferrell's greatest skill as an actor has always been yelling, and them screaming "fire" at the beginning got me, as did the fact that they never came back to show us what the hell that was all about. I'm marginally more excited for this than I was before this trailer came out.
Holmes & Watson opens December 21, opposite Mary Poppins Returns, Aquaman, Bumblebee, and a rumored PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 (weird).
